Luna has developed extremely durable transparent water and oil repellent coatings for multiple surfaces (glass, metal, plastics, paint, wood, textiles)
Many competitive coatings have demonstrated highly water repellant coatings, however these are generally not commercially viable due to complexity, cost, and in particular, lack of durability. Luna has developed superhydrophobic coatings that are simple to apply using conventional techniques and will be cost effective for widespread commercial applications.  Extreme durability is achieved through a tailored polymer/inorganic hybrid with a unique combination of high hardness and toughness. Typical physical properites of the coating are shown below.
- Watershedding: contact angle 117°, watershedding as low as 1° tilt
- Transparency: ~100% (ΔT<0.1%), Haze  ΔH<0.5%
- Adhesion: Â Perfect rating of 5B to glass, acrylic, polycarbonate (ASTM D 3359-02 Crosscut Tape Adhesion Test)
- Solvent resistance: No change in physical properties with 1 hour exposure to acetone, oil, methanol, jet fuel, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), salt water, 0.1 M HCl acid
- Abrasion resistance : Taber abrasion (500 cycles, 500g)
- Transmission ΔT <0.2%
- Haze ΔH <4%
- Environmental stability: QUV (500 hours) – maintains watershedding, transparency, and adhesion with no degradation
- Falling sand abrasion: ΔH = <8% (ASTM D968)
- Field repairable: Demonstrated ‘field repairable’ post treatment to refresh / repair the watershedding surface in the field after heavy abrasion / wear
These coatings have numerous commercial applications:
- Architectural coatings
- Automotive coatings
- Masonry and concrete
- Food processing equipment
- Stain resistant clothing
- Window coatings
- Carpet fiber coatings
- Drag resistance
- Anti-corrosion paints
- Antifouling paints
- Chemical warfare defense
