Fiber Calibration for Distributed Fiber-Optic Strain and Temperature Measurements using the Optical Backscatter Reflectometer
We present a technique for high spatial-resolution distributed strain and temperature measurements using standard telecom-grade fibers using Luna Technology’s Optical Backscatter Reflectometer (OBR).
We describe the calibration of Luna Technology’s Optical Backscatter Reflectometer for distributed fiber-optic strain and temperature sensing in both single mode and gradient index multimode fiber. The measurement technique is based on measuring the spectral shift of the Rayleigh backscatter signal along an optical fiber using swept-wavelength interferometry and converting the spectral shift to strain or temperature change. The instrument can obtain better than 1 cm resolution over 10’s of meters of fiber with 1 μe and 0.1 °C sensitivity in several seconds.
