Luna Innovations advancing cybersecurity solutions

Company’s role as prime contractor for DARPA programs helps to keep weapons systems trusted, safe and mission ready

ROANOKE, Va., Apr 17, 2012 –Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ: LUNA), a leading player in integrated circuits security, is the prime contractor for two programs that help to keep weapons systems trusted, safe and mission-ready.

Over the past seven years Luna has won more than $20 million in contracts related to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) TRUST in Integrated Circuits program, which aims to ensure the trust of integrated circuits used in military systems that are designed and fabricated under untrustworthy conditions.

Luna also is leading an effort on DARPA’s follow-on to TRUST called the Integrity and Reliability of Integrated CircuitS (IRIS) program, which seeks technologies to determine functionality and reliability of complex integrated circuits for military applications.

Luna received a three-year, $12 million contract for IRIS in September 2011.

“While we began our initial work with DARPA in 2005, it has grown into a key component of our new corporate strategy, which includes being the leading choice for integrated circuits security for weapons systems,” said My Chung, CEO of Luna Innovations. “Now, with our success in the TRUST program, we are positioned to start deploying technology that will aid in our nation’s defense.”

The company’s participation in IRIS helps to address a growing security problem, explains Barry Polakowski, vice president of secure computing and communications for Luna. “Integrated circuits are now embedded in every aspect of modern machinery, and are widely used in sophisticated military equipment. The majority of such integrated circuits are made offshore – which presents a potential risk that the parts acquired abroad will not operate only in the specified manner. Luna is proud to participate in a comprehensive program to certify that integrated circuits used in U.S. weapons systems do not contain malicious functions.”

Said Chung: “TRUST and IRIS are cornerstones to integrated circuits technology, and we are pleased to play a key role in helping DARPA achieve its strategic objectives to maintain our military’s technological superiority.”
