Volumetric muscle loss (VML) injuries result in disfiguring defects and functional loss. Current Solutions include free flap transfers and prosthetics, none of which provide the required functional and cosmetic repair. No current scaffolds support muscle tissue regeneration on the volumetric (large) scale.
Luna is developing a bioactive, three-dimensional hydrogel construct that can promote muscle fiber formation, spatially organized vascularization, and controlled degradation. The scaffold will fit within current prefabricated flap surgical techniques.
