At the 2018 Society for Biomaterials in Atlanta, GA, clinicians, researchers, and students from around the world will convene to discuss their latest research, form new collaborations, and be inspired by the work of their peers.  This interdisciplinary gathering is a critical pathway to identifying issues with current technologies, and for translating academic research towards clinical practice. Luna’s Health Science Grouphas been presenting annually at the Society for Biomaterials Meeting since 2012, and is excited to continue this trend with updates on three different technologies at the 2018 meeting. Join us in Atlanta as we discuss our sprayable barrier for the prevention of postoperative adhesions, our BIOcularâ„¢ products designed for the regeneration of corneal tissue, and our line of TuneCoatâ„¢ advanced wound dressings for the localized delivery of analgesics. Descriptions of each technology and details for presentation times are provided below.

Development of a Sprayable Biopolymer Hydrogel for the Prevention of Postoperative Adhesions – Podium Presentation – Thursday April 12, 2018; 2:45 – 3:00 pm

Luna has developed a sprayable hydrogel for application over irregularly shaped internal tissues to prevent the formation of postoperative adhesions. The product is colored to enable visualization of application and has been designed for application with pressurized carbon dioxide to form a temporary barrier over healing tissues during the healing process. Luna has demonstrated biocompatibility of the product in in vitro and in vivo models, and has demonstrated functional prevention of postoperative adhesions in multiple preclinical models in different species. Luna is now working to transition the technology towards final preclinical validation and commercialization. Join us on Thursday April 12, 2018 in the session entitled, “From Conception to Clinical Trial: Examples of Technology Development” as we discuss this exciting technology and its transition from the benchtop through in vivo validation. 

Delivery of Stem Cells using Biomimetic Materials Designed for Ocular Surface Repair – Podium Presentation – Saturday April 14, 2018; 12:00 – 12:15 pm

Luna is developing multiple unique materials solutions for ocular surface repair and globe stabilization. These nanofiber-reinforced hydrogel bandages are capable of mimicking the natural structure of the corneal surface to encourage wound healing responses following difficult to heal corneal injuries and are designed for sutureless application to the corneal surface using photochemical tissue bonding techniques. Luna is investigating the effects of various chemistries on the resultant mechanical, optical, and biological properties of the dressings, and has recently demonstrated the ability to use these dressings to deliver human adipose-derived stem cells to the corneal surface to further improve corneal regeneration. Join us on Saturday April 14, 2018 in the session entitled, “Ophthalmic Biomaterials SIG” to hear more about these unique new material solutions for corneal surface repair. 

Nanofiber-Based Analgesic Bandages for Localized Treatment of Neuropathic Pain  – Poster Presentation – Multiple Times

Finally, Luna is developing unique nanofiber bandages for transdermal delivery of nerve-targeting agents to peripheral nerves. The technology utilizes Luna’s experience developing nanofiber-based dressings that can be loaded with therapeutics to achieve controlled, extended release to the wound site. Luna has demonstrated preliminary feasibility of this technology to load and release the therapeutic from these complex nanofiber-based structures, and has demonstrated subsequent targeting of the delivered product preferentially to nerve cells. Join us at either of the poster sessions to learn more about these novel drug-loaded bandages:
